Medical transcription involves listening to recorded information and transferring its significant content into writing. Most often, this task is accomplished with the use of a dictation machine, which includes a headset and a foot pedal so that the medical transcriptionist may control the volume and playback speed of the dictation. The transcribed material is usually entered into a word processing program and then printed to become part of a patient¡¯s medical record. The content of the transcribed material may contain examination and diagnosis information, forensic results, or surgical summaries, and may be used to supplement accident reports, insurance claims, or other letters of referral. In terms of employment outlook, the number of available medical transcription jobs is expected to increase as the need for standardized documentation and secure information sharing in the healthcare industry continues to expand. However, the demand for medical transcription jobs is also driven by an aging society that generally experiences more frequent medical consultation and treatment, the results of which are frequently shared with third parties. Employment eligibility is particularly favorable for certified transcriptionists that have received formal medical transcription training, who are the most likely to obtain employment in hospitals or large medical practice groups. While the majority of medical transcription jobs are situated in a hospital or a physician¡¯s office, there are other venues that accommodate this career. For one thing, some transcriptionists specialize in a specific field of medicine, such as oncology or forensics. Others may work in a variety of different facilities, such as pharmaceutical labs, government research programs, rehabilitation centers, nursing homes, managed care facilities, and medical libraries. In addition, secretaries or other office staff who provide administrative support may also supply medical transcription services. A growing trend in medical transcription services is self-employment. In fact, a fair number of medical transcription jobs are telecommuting positions obtained through an independent contractor arrangement. This means that the clinician or medical facility supplies the dictation and the independent contractor transcribes the material while working from home. Sometimes, this arrangement may lead to other work than straight transcription. For instance, the contractor may be asked to merge previously transcribed material with new information and update medical records accordingly. Some medical transcription jobs don¡¯t actually involve transcription services at all. In fact, they may be almost purely editorial. In this scenario, the transcriptionist may be charged with the task of proofreading transcribed material for accuracy and quality. This type of employment or independent contractor arrangement often becomes necessary when the work was outsourced to a foreign country, or if the transcription was generated through the use of voice recognition software. |

There are several different types of professor jobs that academics can pursue on the path to, or in lieu of, a career as a college or university professor. Some of these professions include teaching assistant (TA), associate professor, teaching fellow (TF), and adjunct professor. These professor jobs require specific academic credentials that may vary by country or academic institution. Some of these positions may also allow the incumbent to reach tenure, which provides him or her with a contractual level of job security and the opportunity to move up in the ranks of professor jobs. Sometimes referred to as tutors or graduate teaching assistants (GTAs), TAs are graduate students employed by college or universities to assist professors with course instruction. A TA will provide support to the professor during lectures, grade students' work, and may also conduct tutorials or labs independently. Undergraduate teaching assistants (UTAs) are part of a sub-category of TAs who hold a bachelor's, or undergraduate, degree and may be paid by course credit rather than the fixed salary which TAs receive on a contract basis. A TA who has received tenure or established a track record of academic accomplishments set by the college or university is promoted to the position of associate professor. Unlike a TA, a teaching fellow (TF) is an academic who holds a master's degree and instructs an undergraduate class independently. Some universities, however, require that TFs be supervised by a professor, with whom they meet regularly and receive suggestions on ways to improve their teaching skills. TFs are paid higher salaries than TAs, and on a per-semester contract basis. In the UK, the title of "teaching fellow" is occasionally given to an academic staff member who has demonstrated excellence in lecturing. An adjunct professor is a professor who is employed on a part-time, casual basis by a college or university and typically holds a Ph.D. As adjunct professors don't hold permanent professor jobs, they don't receive the same benefits as other academic staff, and are relieved of the research and administrative responsibilities required of full-time, permanent professors. Professors who have made teaching contributions to a department outside of their own can be recognized as adjunct professors in that department in addition to retaining their regular professor jobs, however. |

Ultrasound technologists, also called ultrasound technicians, are specially trained medical personnel who use sonographic equipment to obtain and record visual diagnostic data. Training typically takes two to three years, plus an exam to obtain certification. Ultrasound technologist jobs are typically filled in hospitals and specialty clinics, but may also be found in private practice medical offices. One of the most obvious areas of medicine in which ultrasound technology is routinely used is obstetrics and gynecology. Obtaining an ultrasound is routine for nearly all pregnant women receiving prenatal care and in the case of high risk pregnancies, more than one is typically obtained to monitor growth and development of the fetus. Ultrasound technology is also used to detect and diagnose uterine and ovarian cysts along with other conditions affecting female anatomy. While obstetrics and gynecology is often the first area of medicine that comes to mind when speaking of ultrasound technology, there are many other areas where ultrasound imaging is useful. Other specific areas of medicine where ultrasound technology is used include vascular medicine, diagnostic medicine, cardiology and general internal medicine. Some ultrasound technologist jobs require expertise, experience or credentialing in specific areas, such as obstetrics and abdominal sonography or cardiac sonography, while others are less specialized. Most hospitals and doctors¡¯ offices specify the level of experience and training required for specific positions. In addition to interacting with patients to perform the ultrasound procedure, ultrasound technologists also interpret data and images, keep records of all data collected, calibrate and maintain the equipment, help maintain the diagnostic area or facility, and may schedule appointments as well. The actual amount of time interacting with patients may vary, ranging from 20 minutes to an hour per scheduled patient. Ultrasound technicians may or may not be required to communicate with ordering physicians. The outlook for ultrasound technologist jobs is good. Starting salaries may be on the lower end of the average and range from $43,000 to $50,000 (USD) for full time positions. The higher end of the pay scale encompasses the top 10% of earners making more than $80,000 (USD) per year. While most positions are full-time, some ultrasound technologist jobs are part-time, entailing working in a hospital or facility two to three days per week. Advancement in the field of sonography is possible through experience, additional training and multiple certifications. |

Job shadowing is actually one of the most common of all training techniques for new employees. Essentially, job shadowing involves spending a period of time with a seasoned expert, observing everything that he or she does that is related to the work that is expected to be accomplished as part of the daily routine of the job. Involving one new employee to act as the observer, and one person to function as the demonstrator, this allows the new hire a chance to get a handle of what is involved in performing the tasks associated with the work. Job shadowing can commence at one of two points in the job training process. One of the most common is to assign the new hire to an established employee on the first day. The new hire may spend one to five days following the routine of the employee, learning general job responsibilities, observing how the tasks are carried out, and getting some insight into methods that allow for efficient handling of the job. Another option is to implement the job shadowing after a period of orientation in a classroom setting has taken place. With this application, the job shadowing allows the new hire to already have some background into the workings of the company, with the observation that is picked up during job shadowing building on that foundation of orientation. The combination of structured educational classes with the job observation of an employee with extensive work experience works very well in a number of settings. The concept of job shadowing has many advantages. First, the new hire may often feel intimidated about performing tasks for the first time. By allowing the new person to job shadow a long time employee for a day or two, this can often build up the confidence of the new employee. Along with this advantage, job shadowing allows the new hire to see procedures and methods in actual situations. This can help to bring to life some of the scenarios that were outlined in the training materials, making them much more real to the new hire than they were in the safe environment of the classroom. A third benefit of job shadowing is that the new hire often has a chance to begin building rapport with other employees, which can help to integrate him or her into the job team more quickly. Acceptance into the group can often help the new employee relax and focus on learning the best ways to get things done, rather than being apprehensive about fitting into the corporate culture. |

A realistic job preview is a discussion about the positive and negative aspects of a job to give an applicant an idea of what to expect. This helps people decide whether they are a good fit for a given position. Making informed choices can reduce employee turnover, and people will be less likely to start their jobs and experience disappointment or confusion as a result of not knowing about key details of the work. Many companies offer a realistic job preview early on during the application process and it can take a number of forms. Some companies have videos to provide people with a day-in-the-life glimpse of the workplace. The video will document working conditions and may include interviews with employees who talk about things they enjoy, like employee benefits and a pleasant working environment, as well as drawbacks, like working long hours or having to work on weekends. Other companies may offer written testimonials from employees, often with a frequently asked questions supplement to address specific concerns prospective hires may have. The realistic job preview can also take the form of a series of questions. The questions provide prompts about various situations and working conditions. Based on the answers, the interviewer can provide the applicant with more information about the job, as well as advice to help the applicant make a good decision about moving forward with the application. For example, if a workplace expects self-direction from employees and an applicant says she prefers to be closely supervised and mentored, the interviewer might make her aware of the independent nature of the work, as this could make the job less appealing. Realistic job previews can help employees prepare psychologically, in addition to establishing trust at the onset. Rather than painting a rosy picture, the employer is frank, and this makes employees feel like they can rely on the word of their employers and supervisors. Honesty about less exciting or unpleasant parts of the job assures people considering the company that it is not hiding information in the hopes of enticing people to accept contracts and then springing unpleasant surprises on them. Companies can contract with consultants to create a realistic job preview. The consultant will interview employees, review workplace manuals, and wander through the workplace to learn more about the working conditions, level of satisfaction, and culture at the company. Using this information and acting as an outsider who may have a more neutral view on the company, the consultant prepares a realistic job preview to assist the company with the application process. Companies can also work internally on such projects. |
